the chorus cresting to a crescendo
of a happy birthday
whilst an antique tune accompanies
awkwardly in the background
and you stare blankly ahead
lips dropping drooping down
o beloved matriarch did you know
we sang for you tonight

Fluorescence encased neatly
in dullest whitest plastic;
filament glowing distant,
trapped a world
away in a world of glass,
inert in a flood of argon.
When did we grow so easy
with artificial light?
Do you not wonder that too many
shadows are cast? So many shadows
lie fallen every way and all painfully
faint. Near. Invisible. We stand. Paralysed
in these shadows, crying – Which shadow [...]

on stiletto high,
when a host of eyes
descended upon her,
ravished and fled. Her
face fell and she squirmed,
uneasy. Alone.
In her alien skin.
