If there’s really one film I want my girls to watch, it’s Spanglish.
I just watched it for the second time and it’s such a heart-wrenchingly beautiful film. Yes, it stars Adam Sandler but it really centres on Paz Vega, who plays a strong and independent Mexican mother grappling with the unique challenge of bringing up her daughter the right way while working as a housekeeper in a whiter-than-white household.
I would like my girls to watch the film because its central theme is the navigation of the mother-daughter relationship, which I’m pretty sure most females can and will relate to, whether positively or negatively.
The film poses the quintessential question which defines the tricky dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship – “Is what you (the daughter) really want, to be so different from me (the mother)?”
This question will evince a variety of responses from both mothers and daughters out there alike, so it is best to hear it and understand it in the context of the film.
I said it earlier, but I’ll say it again – Spanglish is a beautiful, beautiful film.
p.s. 3M, I’ll let you watch the film in Term 4 when we have extra time on our hands. As for the rest of my classes, if you want to catch it, let me know and I’ll see what I can do
