What is your reason for living?
This question came up during a Macbeth lesson today. We were considering the reasons why the two murderers, who would go on to murder Banquo, had no qualms in doing so.
There were a few possibilities:
1. Life for them was meaningless, which meant that they had nothing to lose by killing Banquo.
2. They were keen on gaining the favour of Macbeth, the newly crowned king.
3. They bore a grudge against Banquo.
4. They had no morals.
In the final consideration, all these possibilities were valid but as suggested by this quote,
” And I another
So weary with disasters, tugg’d with fortune,
That I would set my lie on any chance,
To mend it, or be rid on’t.”
the overriding reason was the belief that life had no value or meaning for them.
This prompted a discussion about why no one in class was able to fully identify with the murderers.
The simple conclusion?
We all value our lives. We all have something to lose.
What’s my reason for living?
“But the LORD is the true God;
he is the living God and the everlasting King.” (Jeremiah 10:10)
He is.
“yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.” (1 Corinthians 8:6)
Because of what He has done.
” I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
That i may become like Him. Like Christ.
“until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13)
For the ultimate reason of our being – His glory.
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.” (Revelations 4:11)
That’s my reason for living.
What’s yours?
My love for TV/movie villains has led me to follow what they say.
Sort of.
Smith said,”The purpose of life is to end.”
He’s right, isn’t he?It’s true even if we try to avoid it.
Life IS what you make of it,but for those who don’t,Orochimaru said that there probably isn’t much point in life, but if one goes on living he or she will find something interesting.
Perhaps that’s why I exist.
To find some interesting things.
Ahh.. this reminds me of what my mom usually says when she shares her day with my dad.
“I live for my family, not my job.”
then again, any decent mom would say that.:p
ahh.. how she does.
i don’t think i have the maturity or the experience to say what i live for. Even if i could, it would never stay at one thing. There are just too many things to live for.
You kind of of caught me off guard with that question that day in class.
I’ve been asking myself that for awhile already and this is the best answer I’ve come up with:
I live for what I haven’t lived through yet.I live for what is yet to come, because I don’t want to miss out on anything.
And perhaps because death is just too frightening a possiblity to consider I guess?
Life is way too precious (:

Oh!I just have to comment on your Baybeats entry!
Judging from the bands you saw,you went for…Day 3?
Well,Mr Sng, nowadays, apparently it’s cool to be “underground”.
Majority of the people who flock to these events aren’t there for the music, or to connect with people who share similar music interests.
It’s all about “check me out in my silk-screened Thursday/Trivium [insert any other underground-turned-mainstream band's name here] hoodie, standing here soaking in all the cool-ness of all these cool people. I am SUCH a scenester.”
And they’ll probably just leave if the band that is playing’s sound doesn’t go with their “image”.
Oh well.
Radio and MTV kill the music scene.
well, faith, what if you don’t find any interesting things?
for many people, that is the reality of life.

i hope you keep seeking the answer to this question then, joy.
it’s the only question really worth considering. without making sense of this first, everything else in our lives do not make sense.

Hi taina!
you came up with a pretty good answer, though it’s interesting you mentioned the frightening possibility of death.
whatever answer we come up with to the question of the meaning of life must face up to the ultimate problem of death.
how does death affect our reason for living?
i went for Day 2 as well. only plain sunset stood out, though i found out later that they’ve been gaining in popularity for some time.
any news of other upcoming gigs?
my hope is to be able to hear a definitive local sound – a truly Singaporean brand of music. That applies to everything else as well actually.
what makes anything Singaporean?
the search for the Singaporean identity continues…
I’ve found the most interesting thing to me – Japan.
It’s kinda weird how the Japanese can remain composed under ridiculous pressure, how they’re so hospitable (unlike us) and their extemely meticulous code of conduct.
Weird,but commendable.
Also their food, animation and lifestyle in general are some things to look into.
(I shall shamelessly admit that I love anime.)
What makes stuff Singaporean?
I think it’s the Singlish.
Ms Wan said that if you go to a foreign country and hear someone speaking Singlish you know it’s a Singaporean.
(No one will know I’m Singaporean then lol.)
This is why I don’t understand why the government is so obsessed with ridding the world of Singlish. As long as people know how to differentiate Singlish from British English from American English,we can all live happily ever after.(No wait, cancel the ever after. There are wars going on in the Middle East.)
sure, people will convince themselves that they can’t find something interesting.
they haven’t really devoted themselves to looking for interesting stuff.
no matter what, your post was good. i live for the same reason you do, amen that! (:
